Treatment Philosophy

Come As You Are!

HRTC's philosophy of treatment is based on the following principles:

Collaboration: Client and therapist work as partners in treatment.

Continuum: Drug and alcohol use occurs on a continuum.  It ranges from safe and recreational to chaotic and can vary throughout life.

Complexity: Each person’s relationship with drugs and alcohol is influenced by his or her own unique biological, psychological, social and cultural factors.

Change: Behavior change is gradual, especially for people who are using substances to cope with difficult feelings or life situations.

Compassion: Confrontation, although it dominates treatment and is popular on TV, rarely helps people make lasting changes and often reduces trust and creates resistance.

Commitment:  Working with people who continue to drink or use is not “enabling”, it is caring.  In harm reduction therapy, people can explore change without having to stop using as a condition of getting help.
